A Close Shave is the third segment of the twenty-fifth episode of the television show Pucca. It first aired on May 4, 2007.

Synopsis[]

Muji's status of "best mustache" is threatened by the lake-dwelling dugong. To defend his title, the villain sets out to shave the animal's facial hair, though Pucca is on patrol.

Plot[]

Muji is training his mustache fighting style against his zombie minions, certain that no one has better facial hair than him. He's interrupted by Master Soo, annoyed by all his shouting, who tells him that the best mustache of all belongs to the dugong that lives in the lagoon. Muji is offended by such an accusation and rushes to the lagoon to face his mustache competitor.

At the Lagoon, there is a festival being held in the dugong's honor, with everyone wearing fake mustaches. Dada, wearing the dugong mascot costume, is not happy to be swarmed over with rambunctious children. Pucca is watching this when she overhears Ching and Abyo bring Garu over to get a picture with the mascot.

The Ninja boy is shy to approach the mascot figure who suddenly steals a kiss from him in the midst of the picture, revealing to be Pucca in the costume. This leads to the usual chase scene, though Garu manages to escape by latching a grappling hook onto a dugong hot air balloon. Pucca is not pleased but is quickly distracted when she sees Muji diving into the lagoon with an electric razor (which we'll assume is waterproof). She confronts him in the water and they do battle, which ends with Pucca tying his mustache in a knot and sending him flying.

The other villagers are still enjoying the festivities, though Ching wonders where Pucca has run off to. Deep beneath the lagoon, Muji is still trying to find the dugong, but is again threatened by Mermaid Pucca who brandishes a baby squid. Muji laughs at such a tiny creature but quickly finds the real weapon is the squid's parent which pummels him for making its baby cry. Pucca then locks him into a giant clam which, displeased by his taste, launches him through the water.

The chefs are on the docks, using a telescope to try and spot the dugong, though all they spy is Santa out for a swim.

Muji refuses to give up his hunt for the dugong and gets into another fight with Mermaid Pucca. She pulls out a hammerhead shark which Muji grabs with his mustache. But this was her plan as she winds up the mustache so it spins like a propeller to drag Muji off into the distance. She's satisfied with a job well done, but in the distance, an odd shadow is coming closer.

Up on the beach, the dugong finally shows itself to the cheers of the villagers. Muji is waiting in the wings, razor in had and ready to shave off the animal's famous mustache, But Pucca comes to the rescue by snatching the head off Dada's costume and planting it on Muji. The dugong mistakes the villain for a mate and latches on with its giant fins for a snuggle. The villagers learn that the dugong, despite the mustache, is a female and find this display of love adorable. Muji wriggles loose and swims into the distance, with his new admirer hot on his heels.

Garu pops up, drifting in a body of water, when Mermaid Pucca steals a kiss off of him.

Trivia[]

  • A running gag throughout the episode is that the dugong has an inordinately large, bushy moustache. However, in real life manatees/dugongs tend to have very sparce facial hair.

Errors[]

  • When Pucca put Muji in a clam, she was topless. But in the next scene her bikini top came back. This could have been done intentionally for censorship, however.
