And the Band Played Rong is the first segment of the eighteenth episode of the television show Pucca. It first aired March 5, 2007.

Synopsis[]

The chefs hold a band contest to find the perfect musicians for their new TV commercial.

Plot[]

The chefs see a TV commercial promoting a noodle stand and Uncle Dumpling comes up with the idea to have their own jingle to help promote the Goh-Rong Restaurant. They'll hold a contest and the one with the best sing can perform it on their commercial. Pucca overhears this and decides to start a band, inviting Ching to join her.

Dozens of Sooga villagers turn up to perform in the contest, including Garu. Tobe, with desires to ruin Garu's performance (plus a personal hatred of his chosen instrument) readies his ninjas to plant a few explosives. The chefs begin their contest with a performance from Abyo, but reject his song. Beneath the stage, Tobe's ninjas are setting up their explosives for when Garu arrives and a couple of them appreciate Abyo's music, though using the power-kegs as bongos gets them scolded by Tobe.

Elsewhere, Pucca and Ching visit a music store for the instruments to use in their band, allowed to borrow them from the music enthusiast that runs the shop.

The hunt for a jingle is not going so well. Master Soo's rap makes the chefs uncomfortable, Muji's heavy metal is a headache, Dada freezes at the mic, urinating himself, and Santa's dreidel song is cut off before he even finishes. At last, it is Garu's turn and though the calming music from his erhu is nice, the chefs don't think it will bring them new customers. Backstage, Tobe is disgusted by the erhu and tries to detonate his explosives, but they don't go off (probably from his minion's incompetence). He thus resorts to plan B: taking the stage himself to perform a slam poem insulting Garu. The chefs predict this will end badly.

Pucca and Ching, joined by a female Goblin, are rehearsing their own song and like how it sounds. They just need a lead singer and though Ching suggest Pucca could do it, that doesn't seem to be an option. Abyo wanders through, still miffed about the chefs rejection, and they offer him a place in their all-girl band so long as he puts on a dress. Despite initial rejection, he accepts.

Tobe is still doing his slam performance against Garu but when he takes the insults one too far by mentioning Pucca, Garu snaps and it becomes a fight of instruments. Or as Linguini puts it, a true "battle of the bands.

Despite the fight going on, Pucca's band takes the stage and performs their song with Abyo (in his dress) as their lead singer. And it's clear right away this one is just what the chefs were looking for (plus Ring Ring appreciates Abyo's look). Underneath the floor, the ninjas finally manage to set off their explosives but these become an impressive pyrotechnics display for Pucca's band, which draws the cheers of everyone. The band take their bows and Abyo remarks on how comfortable it is to wear a dress, though the questioning looks of the girls and Garu make him take it back.

Later, the commercial proves to be a success and the chefs agree that they should have just hired Pucca from the start, which would have saved them a lot of headaches.
