HI-YA!

—Abyo's catchphrase

Abyo (아뵤, Abyo) is one of the major characters in the Pucca universe. Abyo is a very outgoing, competitive, stubborn, energetic, and an excitable boy. He's Garu's best friend, and he's also good friends with Pucca and Ching. A practitioner of Kung Fu, Abyo uses nunchucks as weapons and, as a signature move, has a habit of tearing his shirt in half.

Appearance[]

Abyo's signature move is a running gag in the series: he yells "Hi-Ya!" (sometimes after jumping), and rips off his shirt at least once in almost every episode (some examples in which he didn't rip his shirt off are episodes Unfortunate Cookies and He Loves Me Not). If he can't rip his shirt off, he settles for whatever else he happens to be wearing, resulting in him severely embarrassing himself in public. His physical appearance is an homage to martial arts icon Bruce Lee, but unlike the late martial artist, Abyo's personality is very headstrong and impulsive and it is with this kind of attitude that he is often left with the shorter end of the stick. He also has a big appetite, and tends to eat non-stop, even without looking.

Abyo is the son of Bruce, the police chief of Sooga Village. He trains under Chang at the Turtle Training Hall with Garu, Ching, and Ssoso.

In Fab Abyo, Abyo is transformed by Starla, Mister Zoom, and J.P. into a handsome boy after being declared the "chosen one". In Misplaced Face, he literally loses his face after showing off (throughout the series he is shown to be a bit of a show-off) and then embarrassing himself. In the end, Abyo appeared to return Ching's love when he and Ching kissed.

There also has been instances where Abyo seems to return Ching's feelings. Such as in Misplaced Face when he willingly kisses Ching. Another instance when is in Fab Abyo, he seems to be heading towards the Ching doll. In Soap Opera, when Dada steals Ching's attention, Abyo tries to win it back. In On Thin Ice, he blushes when Ching compliments him. However, he also is impressed by her martial art skills. He is never as reluctant as Garu to receive her affections. In fact, on some occasions he seems to enjoy them. He also seems protective of her, like in Chicken Spots, when Abyo notices Ching being chased by the cloud of disease, and attempts to help her (by ripping off his shirt, as per usual), before being overcome by the spots himself. He also hangs out with her quite often, and they usually plan stuff together, such as He loves Me Not. It's reasonable to assume that he has feelings for Ching, just no interest in anything exclusive.

Character variations[]

Appearance[]

Abyo1

Abyo's appearance

Abyo has a warm skin color, pink cheeks and black hair. He wears a black T-shirt, a pair of pants and shoes. He rips his shirt in half whenever he wants to show off or "fight".

Relationships[]

Ching[]

Ching has a crush on Abyo, although he doesn't seem to take notice of it. She often gets jealous when Abyo hangs out with other girls, and can be clingy at times (though not to the same extent like how Pucca chases Garu). Ching refers to him as her boyfriend. In Into Pucca's Dream, Pucca becomes unable to wake up from a dream, and her friends had to enter it in order to help her wake up. In the dream, Abyo and Ching were seen as a couple; Abyo was disgusted while Ching thought it was cute.

Garu[]

Garu is Abyo's best friend. They are both martial artists and love to have sparring matches with each other. Abyo wants to be better then him and can be jealous at times; although, Abyo can appear annoying to Garu in some occasions. In some episodes, he is shown as Garu's sidekick (ex. Noodle to the Stars).

Bruce[]

Bruce is Abyo's father. Abyo can be a troublemaker, but he does seem to respect his father, even if he doesn't do what he is told all the time.

Pucca[]

Abyo is a friend to Pucca, where he can be a show off, that it may make their friendship not as close as other people, but they still both care for each other, even if it isn't shown as openly in the series. In "Abra-Ca-Pucca", he begins to kiss her, and flirt with her, while under a love spell she accidentally cast.

Ring Ring[]

Abyo often sees her as an enemy, but for most of the time, they maintain a neutral disposition towards one another.

Abilities[]

Throughout the series, Abyo has shown to be skilled in both his athleticism and martial arts, though not to the extent of some of his friends like Pucca and Garu. Abyo uses martial skills like Kung Fu and often uses weapons that always end up breaking.

Speaking Termite[]

In the episode Chop Chewie, Abyo is able to pick up on the termite language after entering into the fortress for a couple of hours. There, he was able to recite the Termite’s queen’s words and translates it well to Garu, who is confused and astounded by it.
