Tobe (또베, Ttobe) is Garu's enemy. For some reason, Tobe is always trying to gain vengeance against Garu ("Vengeance!" is his catchphrase) and strives to defeat him at all cost. However, he is rarely capable of doing so, much less being able to handle Pucca.

Character Bio[]

In the Jetix series, Tobe often makes statements that range from melodramatic to just plain ridiculous, e.g., "The fly is walking right into my web-like... mousetrap!" Though it seems that Tobe and Garu might come to respect each other as friends after being stuck together in "Stuck on Goo," Tobe immediately reverts to evil. The fact that Tobe frequently mentions Garu's ancestors may be a clue to the cause of their rivalry; however, when Garu is erased in "Tame That Toon," Tobe loses all memory of him and says to himself that he wants vengeance on someone — he randomly chooses Dada, who is sweeping the front of the Goh-Rong and is the first person to come in sight. This may hint that Garu was just an innocent bystander whom Tobe just happened to pick to gain vengeance on.

Tobe has an X-shaped scar between his eyes and usually wears a ninja mask; nevertheless, Tobe appears without his mask on many occasions. Tobe is generally accompanied by his ninja minions who, more often than not, eliminate themselves by misinterpreting Tobe's commands or just by being utterly stupid, much to Tobe's annoyance. He apparently retains their services because they work cheap, as Tobe himself attested to Garu when they were stuck together. Tobe's minions are almost never unmasked, even if they go to sleep.

In Pucca: Love Recipe, he's still an antagonist and a rival to Garu. However, his image has somewhat softened in some episodes. He's sometimes more of a lackey to Fyah than the main villain. In one episode he and his ninja gang were shown to have a soft spot for Florist's mascot known as "Flower Fairy" and even came to her defense when she was being harassed by the Dong King Restaurant Panda (i.e., Fyah in a mascot costume) — this is also one of the few times Tobe and his ninjas hadn't committed the crime they were accused of, which makes Tobe seriously angry.

Character variations[]

Appearance[]

In the Jetix series and original shorts, Tobe wears dark blue ninja clothes, a head protector with 3 X's (similar to his minions, who only have one), and has an X-shaped scar between his eyes. He has triangular eyebrows and round pupils. With his mask off, he has jet black hair tied in a ponytail and dimples on each corner of his mouth. He is armed with two dark gray katanas.

Tobe has a varied vocal range, changing his tone whenever he talks or yells on different occasions. Sometimes his voice sounds hoarse due to his frequent yelling.

In Pucca: Love Recipe, he wears a blue jumpsuit, with gray gloves and belt. He also carries a brown blunt sword.

Relationships[]

  • Garu: Garu is Tobe's enemy for unknown reasons and Tobe always declares revenge against him. Tobe continually wants to fight him, but always ends up losing.
    • In "And the Band Played Rong," Tobe hated Garu playing his erhu way more than Garu without it, thus making his stomach churn badly.
    • In "Stuck on Goo," he gets along with Garu after declaring a truce and expresses solidarity with Garu's hardships.
  • Abyo: Despite Abyo's friendship and his being a sidekick to Garu, Tobe has neutral contact with Abyo, and usually refuses to fight with him. In "Matinee Mayhem", they were watching a movie along with Garu and shared the same opinion of Pucca's temper.
  • Tobe's ninjas are his henchmen, but always end up making him look like a fool. Although they are clumsy and practically useless all the time, Tobe continues to rely on them to help with his schemes, because they "work cheap".
  • Chief: Chief has been Tobe's girlfriend since the episode "Evil Love." He fell in love with her when a cat launched Cupid's arrow into him by accident; then he accidentally married her. It is unknown if they are still married. Like in the episode Trial by Fury, there was no connections to tell if they were married.
  • Pucca: Tobe is usually scared of Pucca if he sees that she has lost her temper. When this happens he tries to find a way out of the situation; however, this never works out. Pucca is Tobe's most unconquerable adversary. For example, in "Tobe's Nighttime Troubles," he had planned to deprive Garu of sleep to render him unable to fight (a very cheap tactic); however, Pucca also stayed up the whole time to make sure he couldn't make his plan work. Any time Tobe is involved with Garu at all, chances are Pucca will be there. Due to this, Tobe will never have his way no matter what he does.

Quotes[]

  • "Ninjas atta...[clears throat]...ATTACK!"
  • "I have never known such...HORROR."
  • "I feel funny inside...something beating in my chest."
  • "If there's one thing that makes my stomach churn more than Garu, it's Garu playing that stupid erhu."
  • "A true ninja is never caught off guard."
  • "Ha ha! A true ninja would have seen a trap inside a trap like that!"
  • "I'll be back."
  • "We'll meet again!"
  • "Egama-huh?"
  • "I really hate Valentine's Day!"

Trivia[]

  • The origin of Tobe's X-shaped scar is never explained in the series. However, according to a video on the official Pucca YouTube channel, it mentions that Garu caused the scar, most likely in a fight.[1]
  • In "Stuck on Goo," Pucca was skipping towards Garu to kiss him, but when he suddenly turned around, she ended up kissing Tobe (who was being used as a shield by Garu) instead. Pucca then realized what happened and became disgusted, while Tobe was horrified. As soon as Garu escaped, Tobe stated that he "hadn't known such horror," thus expressing solidarity with Garu.
  • Tobe tends to break the fourth wall when left alone by his ninjas.
  • In some episodes, Tobe can eat or drink anything, without even having to take his mask off. (This could be an error, but the creators could also have done that to make it seem silly and/or see who would catch that "mistake.")
  • As expressed by his comments in several episodes of the Jetix series, Tobe seems to be under the impression that Pucca is Garu's girlfriend.
  • In "Evil Love," it is shown that Tobe accidentally married Chief, after having the arrow removed by Pucca. However, it was never mentioned any more after this episode.
  • Tobe marks his first appearance in "Oasis" during the Pucca Funny Love shorts in 2003.
  • In "Samba of Doom", Tobe has shown to have skills for soccer.
  • In "Stuck on Goo", Tobe is shown to be a bit noisy and messy when eating, mainly while chewing. (This may be a reason why he doesn't visit the Goh-Rong.)
  • On some occasions throughout the series, Tobe ends up showing his soft side.
  • Tobe had fewer appearances during the second season than in the first one during the Jetix series. He did make cameos or brief appearances, such as in "Big Top Bang Bang," "Little Miss Sooga," "Break My Day," "Ching It On," and "Full Moon Pucca."
  • In Pucca: Love Recipe, Tobe now lives in a treehouse. In the Jetix series, he was in an actual house which he called his "lair."
  • In "Pucca Power Up," Tobe almost kidnapped Garu and took over Sooga Village; however, Pucca stopped him from doing so.
  • In some official images, it's revealed that Tobe likes to transform common objects into weapons.
